The Gamblers: When Net Zero Collides With Energy Security

Britain is approaching winter with a dangerous energy-security equation: very low gas storage, heavy dependence on imports, and a weather wildcard that cannot be forecast with certainty.
The UK’s only large-scale gas storage facility, Rough, is practically empty. Centrica says the market currently does not make storage commercially viable without a supporting framework. Rough can hold up to 54 Bcf—roughly enough to heat 2.4 million homes through winter—and represents about half of Britain’s total storage capacity.
The UK government says it expects storage to provide roughly 5% of GB gas demand this winter, relying instead on domestic production, European pipeline imports and LNG.
That strategy becomes more exposed if winter weather turns against it.
NOAA has forecast a strong probability of El Niño continuing through winter 2026–27. UK government analysis says El Niño raises the risk of easterly/northerly winds and cold snaps in early 2027.
And the polar-vortex question matters. Research indicates that major sudden stratospheric warmings occurred in 58% of historical El Niño winters—but an SSW does not automatically produce a UK cold wave. The timing, atmospheric circulation and regional response determine the outcome.
That is the gamble: entering the back half of winter with limited domestic storage and assuming global LNG and European pipeline supplies will remain available when Britain needs them most.
Net zero and energy security do not have to be competing objectives. But decarbonization cannot eliminate the need for resilience during the transition.
Energy policy should insure against low-probability, high-impact events—not assume they won't happen.
The question for Britain is simple:
Is energy security being treated as infrastructure—or as an afterthought?
