Natural Gas: Is the AI Premium on the Forward Curve About to Unwind? The Back End May Be Telling Us Something.

The natural gas forward curve may be signaling a shift in market sentiment. As the AI/Data Center narrative loses momentum, the premium assigned to longer-dated natural gas contracts deserves a closer look.
The Trade to Watch: January 2028 Henry Hub minus January 2027 Henry Hub.
This spread offers a snapshot of how the market values natural gas one year further into the future. The January 2028 premium reflects expectations for future supply, demand, infrastructure development and, increasingly, electricity consumption driven by AI and Data Centers.
But what happens if those expectations change?
Consider several potential catalysts:
• Data Center projects face delayed permitting, regulatory hurdles or outright approval denials.
• Utilities struggle to secure power commitments, transmission capacity and generation infrastructure.
• AI investment slows, or projected electricity demand gets revised lower.
• Natural gas-fired generation additions fail to materialize on anticipated timelines.
• Political and community opposition increasingly challenges the speed and scale of Data Center development.
If these developments materialize, the long-dated natural gas demand premium could erode, putting downward pressure on the back end of the forward curve and narrowing the January 2028/January 2027 spread.
Why It Matters:
This isn't necessarily a bearish call on near-term natural gas. LNG exports, industrial demand, weather, production and storage remain independent market drivers. The distinction is between today's physical fundamentals and tomorrow's anticipated demand.
The market has increasingly incorporated AI and Data Center growth into its long-term power and natural gas outlook. But projected demand is not the same as committed demand, and announced projects are not the same as operating facilities.
The Bigger Question:
Has the market priced in too much future AI-related natural gas demand, too soon?
Watch the January 2028 minus January 2027 spread. If the AI/Data Center narrative continues to weaken, the back end of the natural gas curve could be where the repricing begins.
Remember: a narrowing spread can also result from January 2027 strengthening relative to January 2028. Watch both outright contracts.
The market trades expectations. Sometimes those expectations need a reality check.
